Only some of the hits from Keyshia Cole's iconic debut album, The Way It Is. 

Released on June 21st, 2005, The Way It Is catapulted Cole into R&B stardom, debuting at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 and eventually going platinum. Fueled by soul-baring hits like “Love,” “I Should Have Cheated” and “I Changed My Mind,” the album blended raw storytelling with radio-ready hooks, establishing her as one of the genre’s most emotionally resonant voices. The project earned Cole two GRAMMY nominations and positioned her as part of the mid-2000s wave of artists redefining R&B for a new generation. Supported by the Billboard Hot 100 top-20 single "Love", the album received a platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and earned two nominations at the 2006 Soul Train Music Awards.

The Way It Is would also go on to inspire her BET reality series of the same name, which documented the Oakland native’s personal and professional journey at the height of her career. Airing from 2006 to 2008, the show solidified Cole’s bond with fans by offering a rare look into the challenges and triumphs behind the spotlight.

Toronto's event kicks off on Wednesday, July 9th, 2025, 7pm at the Coca-Cola Coliseum, and will feature special guests like Amerie, Tink, and Elijah Blake.

Beyond the Album

To create inspiration for this giveaway, I had to tap into the experiences and emotions that penned these lyrical stories. If you don't know, Keyshia Cole's debut album, The Way It Is, was inspired by her own experiences with heartbreak and mistrust in personal romantic relationships, particularly one significant instance of infidelity that led her to move from her home city of Oakland to Los Angeles.The album's themes are centered around the "ugly" aspects of love, exploring betrayal, insecurity, and the struggle to maintain dignity after being hurt.
